TIANS Floats Tourism Revival Strategy

By Transcontinental Staff

In the face of what may be a poor 2006 tourist season, the Tourism Industry Association for Nova Scotia (TIANS) announced this past week that it had launched the Nova Scotia Strategy for Sustainable Coastal Tourism Development to promote Nova Scotia's coastline to visitors. The initiative is one of 11 key actions aimed at doubling revenues in a weakening sector.

"The lure of the ocean and our coastal zones are integral and highly recognizable components of the Nova Scotia tourism product," says Susan Tilley-Russell, Chair of TIANS. "To ensure our vision for growth, and ultimately sustainability for tourism, we must balance key issues such as product development, accessibility and increased visitation with equal impetus in the areas of cultural identity and protection, ecological and wildlife preservation."

The culmination of extensive research, consultation and policy planning undertaken by TIANS and its Sustainable Coastal Strategy Committee has led to the release of the Nova Scotia Strategy for Sustainable Coastal Tourism Development. The document, in draft form, has been posted to the Nova Scotia Vision for Tourism's web site, www.nstourismvision.com. The deadline for input is June 23, 2006.
